Joe Carvin, the Rye town supervisor and hedge fund manager, who is vying for the Republican line to run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, sent out a letter today to party leaders asking for their support at the March 16 convention in Rochester.
Calling himself a “straight talker,” Carvin said Washington is in need of courageous leaders who are willing to cut spending, even if its not popular.
Carvin is up against attorney Wendy Long and Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos.
Here is the letter he sent to party leaders:

Dear Chairman:
If you are as concerned about the future of this country as I am – and I know you are – I ask for your support at
the Republican State Convention on Friday, March 16.
I believe I am the most electable candidate to run against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand this fall, but I cannot get on the ballot without your help.
I am a 57-year-old husband and father who cares deeply about his country. I have been blessed with a great life, but
I cannot stand on the sidelines while my country is being ruined. So I am putting $1 million into a campaign account in the coming days as seed money for my race for the United States Senate. I have the ability to raise far more.
I am a native New Yorker and a long-term investor in the agricultural industry. I hold a B.A. from Tulane University; a M.B.A from New York University, and a M.P.A. from Harvard University. I have been fortunate to live and work on five continents, and I speak Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Wolof (a West African language.)
My international business experience is important for two reasons: It allows me to communicate with voters who don’t traditionally vote Republican, and it gives me a breadth of understanding about the world economy that other candidates, including Ms. Gillibrand, do not
enjoy. It is a must today.
Young American workers are living in a starkly different world than the one in which many of us were raised, and they need to be prepared to compete in it. They cannot do that, though, if their elected leaders in Washington are not willing to make the tough choices necessary to get the American economy squarely on its feet. My campaign will be rooted in these employment and economic issues.
The answers to our problems are clear. What’s missing in Washington is courage. I do not care about being politically correct. I have no interest in cutting deals. I am running for office to do what needs to be done – and I am a straight talker at a time when I believe New York voters are thirsting for one.
The United States is being challenged as never before, and people understand that. Democrats in Washington – and many Republicans – continue to insult the intelligence of Americans. The fact of the matter is that we have to cut spending, taxes —and especially entitlements. That’s not politically popular, but it must be done. Voters get that.
There are two elected leaders in this country I would seek to emulate in office, Congressman Paul Ryan and Governor Mitch Daniels. They are smart, honest, and brave – and they have been electorally rewarded for being so. So has New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
The problems facing America are no longer ideological, they are mathematical. And that is why I am running. Through the grace of God I have been given the tools and experience Washington needs at this exact moment in time. And I will do everything in my power to get there to serve the people of this state ably and honestly.
